Choosing engine oil: what do viscosity grades mean?

Engine oil reduces friction, helps control heat and carries contaminants away from internal parts. Choose the viscosity and performance specification listed in the vehicle manual. Oil type, change interval, filter quality and driving conditions all matter; a higher price alone does not make an oil suitable.
